Mounjaro and Ozempic are often mentioned in the same breath, and both have strong reputations for weight loss. They are not the same medicine, though, and understanding how they differ helps you have a better conversation with your doctor.

The basics

Ozempic contains semaglutide. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide. Both are once-weekly injections, both started life in the management of type 2 diabetes, and both belong to the broader family of incretin medications that influence appetite and blood sugar. The key difference sits in how many hormone pathways each one targets.

How they work differently

Semaglutide, the ingredient in Ozempic, acts on a single hormone pathway called GLP-1. It reduces appetite, slows stomach emptying, and helps you feel satisfied with less food.

Tirzepatide, the ingredient in Mounjaro, acts on two pathways. It targets GLP-1 as well as a second hormone called GIP. The thinking is that working on both pathways at once can produce a stronger effect on appetite and metabolism for many people.

One pathway versus two is the simplest way to remember the difference. Ozempic works on GLP-1 alone, while Mounjaro works on GLP-1 and GIP together.

Weight loss results

In clinical studies, both produced significant weight loss, and the dual-action approach of tirzepatide showed larger average results at higher doses for many participants. That said, averages are not promises. Individual response varies a great deal, and the best medicine for you is the one your body tolerates well and that you can sustain.

Side effects

The side effect profiles are broadly similar. Nausea, reduced appetite, mild digestive changes, and occasional reflux are the most common for both, usually easing within the first weeks and after each dose increase. As with any GLP-1 medication, a doctor screens for the conditions where these treatments are not suitable.

Which is right for you

This is not a decision to make from a blog. The right choice depends on your health history, your other medication, how your body responds, availability, and cost. A registered doctor weighs all of this and recommends the most appropriate option, then adjusts if needed. That is the value of a doctor-led programme over a self-select checkout.
